woodblock work
Jiang Miao was born in Jilin in 1981. Miao is specialized in woodblock printmaking. She is living and working at her studio in Beijing, China. Jiang Miao acquired a B.F.A. in 2005 and a M.F.A. in 2009 from the top Chinese Art school – Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing, China, where some of the most successful Chinese Artists studied at. Jiang Miao's works have already been collected by various museums, galleries, and collectors worldwide.

Inspired by her personal experience, Jiang Miao spontaneously reveals the innermost characters and non-material nature from the view of creative intention. In addition to her delicate portrait of the transcendental imagination, she is adept in observing and depicting the emotions, mind and intelligence of her female peers who grew up in modern society.

Jiang Miao frankly admitted that her understanding of females is superior to her understanding of males due to her own gender and upbringing. Therefore, the female motif has been persisted to this day. As an ordinary person, the praiseworthy significance of this female artist is not her femininity and childishness, but her exquisite and intuitive quality and child-like imagination. both of which melt the snow of the rational world, cleanse the dust of material contamination and finally flow back toward the pure source of spirituality.

In terms of artistic language practice, Jiang Miao develops a sense of deviation from figurative forms, organically integrating the concrete with the abstract. The striking contrast between figures and the entire space embodies the enduring spirit. The exploration of Jiang Miao's work indicates how to deal with the relationship between characters and the background space. The mediocre institution models have been avoided by Jiang Miao in order to reach the real space. The background of her works tends to be the scene far away from the mundane experience, such as, sea, river bank, grassland and even desert, but in the whole, it is the hard-to-recognize transcendental space.

The creation of texture is commendable in Jiang Miao's works. "Texture" refers to concave - convex principle adopted in printmaking, acting as the language to show the vitality of the works. It can purely be a certain kind of psychological feeling, or an appreciation of touch with the "Printmaking taste": black and white, abstract and concrete, beautiful and ugly, rough and fine, strong and weak. Jiang Miao properly understands this kernel advantage and applies it to her wood engraving. She modifies her carving knives in her own special way to create the rich texture, enhancing the random changes in the two-dimensional color gamut unlike traditional woodblock artist. Her knife was modified to function more as a brush, than simply a woodblock knife to create flexibility in creating expressive tones within her work. The woodblock itself becomes a canvas of expression just as important as the print.
